A Strong Finish to 2025 for Our TDP

Macarthur Football Association is proud to celebrate the conclusion of another successful term of the Talent Development Program, recognising the dedication, improvement and commitment shown by players across all age groups.

This term marked an exciting milestone for the program, with 26 players graduating from TDP and progressing into representative football for the 2026 season. Their achievement reflects not only individual effort, but also the strong development environment created by our coaches and support staff.

Across the program, players were this term recognised with two awards per squad, a Most Valuable Player (MVP) and a TDP Spirit of the Game Award. Both awards were introduced to reward the efforts players had put in throughout the term. The MVP Award being for the player who coaches felt put on consistent outstanding performances and exemplified the TDP values throughout the term. The TDP Spirit of the Game Award sought to celebrate the player who demonstrated outstanding sportsmanship, attitude and respect both on and off the field.

We also congratulated the players who graduated from the program this term and will progress into representative football in 2026 with a "TDP Graduate" Medal. A total of 26 players from this Term 4 2025 Intake have been successful in progressing into representative football.

Expressions of Interest are now open for the Term 1 2026 Talent Development Program. Players seeking to continue their development and explore future representative pathways are encouraged to apply via the MFA website:
https://macarthurfootball.com.au/talent-development-program/

We are also excited to confirm that the Girls TDP program will expand in Term 1 2026 to include a U15 Girls age group, further strengthening female development opportunities within Macarthur Football Association.

Congratulations to all players on a fantastic term. We look forward to seeing your continued growth and success in 2026.

Futsal Provides Key Pre-Season Development at Inaugural MSAP Gala Day

Macarthur Football Association successfully delivered the first-ever MFA Futsal MSAP Gala Day, providing an important pre-season playing opportunity for clubs preparing for the 2026 MSAP season.

The inaugural event saw over 30 teams take part, with the majority made up of prospective MSAP teams, alongside teams from the MFA and Macarthur Rams JDL program, as well as a female team representing the Macarthur Quake Futsal Club.

Designed as a pre-season gala day, the event aimed to provide MSAP clubs with additional game-based development opportunities through futsal. The 5-a-side format, played on smaller courts, naturally increased player involvement and exposure to the ball, placing players in more frequent technical and decision-making situations throughout each match.

With reduced time and space, players were required to operate under higher pressure, supporting the development of close ball control, quick footwork and composure in tight areas. The fast-paced nature of the game, combined with constant transitions between attack and defence, also challenged players to react quickly and adapt, contributing to improvements in decision-making, agility and overall game awareness, key attributes that will support player and team development heading into the 2026 MSAP season.

The day was well supported by clubs, coaches and families, with a strong standard of participation and sportsmanship on display throughout. With four courts operating simultaneously, the venue was filled with energy and community spirit, creating an enjoyable environment for all involved in the lead-up to the Christmas period.

Macarthur Football Association would like to thank all clubs, players, coaches and officials for their involvement in the successful delivery of the inaugural MFA Futsal MSAP Gala Day.

Macarthur Football Shines in Inaugural All Stars Matches

The first-ever edition of the Macarthur All Stars Matches took place on Saturday, 27 September at Lynwood Park Stadium, bringing together the region’s best footballers in an afternoon and evening of quality football.

The NPL All Stars squads were made up of players from Camden Tigers FC and Macarthur Rams FC, ensuring that every player who took part represented Macarthur football. The M-League All Stars squads were selected from the recently announced M-League Teams of the Year, which were presented at the M-League Awards Night just two weeks earlier.

Beyond the results, the day was a celebration of community, showcasing the depth of quality across grassroots, representative, and elite football in the region.

Thanks to Our Partners

Macarthur Football Association extends sincere thanks to:

  • Wests Group Macarthur, the proud naming rights partner of the M-League competition.
  • GIOCA, for designing and supplying the playing kits worn by both teams.
  • Macarthur Rams FC and Camden Tigers FC, for supplying the talented squads that made up the NPL All Stars.

This inaugural edition was only the beginning; the Macarthur All Stars Matches will now become an annual fixture, providing a stage for the region’s best footballers to come together and celebrate the game we love.

Wet Weather Impact: Finals Series and Gala Day Update

Over the past week, the Macarthur region has experienced significant rainfall, resulting in saturated grounds across the area. As a result, local councils have now officially closed grounds.

This has a direct impact on the start of our finals series for the majority of competition teams and the scheduled MiniRoos Gala Days planned across the association this weekend.

After thorough assessment and with heavy hearts, Macarthur Football Association has made the following decisions:

🏆 Finals Series Format Update
To ensure we are still able to complete our finals within the seasonal hire period for fields, the format will be reduced from 3 weeks to 2 weeks. Finals will now proceed as follows:

Semi-Finals (Week 1):
1st vs 4th
2nd vs 3rd

Grand Finals (Week 2):
Winners from each Semi-Final will progress to the Grand Final

⚽ MiniRoos Gala Days Cancelled
All MiniRoos Gala Days scheduled for 2025 have been cancelled. We understand how much our young players and families look forward to these events, and this decision has not been made lightly.

👟 M-League and MYL Competitions
The M-League and Macarthur Youth League (MYL) competitions will continue as planned:
⚽Boys’ MYL and M-League Men finals began last weekend and will continue into round 2 this weekend
⚽Girls’ MYL and M-League Women finals will commence this weekend

All M-League and MYL matches will be relocated to the two synthetic, all-weather pitches in Macarthur, Lynwood Park and Nott Oval.

We appreciate your understanding and cooperation as we navigate these weather challenges. Our team is working hard to ensure all remaining fixtures can be delivered in the safest and fairest way possible.

Kind regards,
Paul Bertolissio
General Manager

History in the Making: First TDP Teams Ready for Term 3, 2025

We are proud to present the inaugural Talent Development Program (TDP) teams for Term 3, 2025, the very first squads to represent this brand-new initiative in our region.

Earlier this year, we introduced the TDP as a high-performance pathway designed to identify and nurture promising young footballers within the Macarthur community. Following a successful talent identification process, these players were selected to form our foundation squads, making history as the first participants in the program.

For the past four weeks, our TDP teams have been working hard on the training pitch, sharpening their skills, building team connections, and preparing for competitive football at the next level. Now, their efforts will be rewarded as they take part in their first official matches over the next week against the Macarthur Rams FC sides, a milestone moment for both the players and the program.

This announcement not only celebrates the individuals who have earned their place in these squads but also the grassroots clubs that continue to play a vital role in their football journey. The TDP is about more than just player development; it’s about creating opportunities, strengthening pathways, and uniting our community behind the future stars of the game.

For Tony, coaching is about much more than producing great players, it’s about guiding young people to become their best selves through sport. Over six years with Bradbury Ambarvale FC, Tony has shaped his coaching philosophy around developing the whole player: technically, tactically, physically, and mentally.

“Soccer is more than just a game; it’s a vehicle for teaching discipline, teamwork, resilience, and respect.”

Tony’s own journey began as a passionate player. As he transitioned into coaching, he discovered a deeper calling, supporting others to succeed and thrive. What started as helping with younger teams eventually became a full coaching career, backed by formal training, a growing knowledge base, and years of lived experience.

“Every player I’ve coached has taught me something new. Watching them grow, overcome challenges, and find confidence, that’s where the real inspiration comes from.”

Tony’s coaching style has evolved significantly over the years, shaped by experience, reflection, and a deep understanding of player development. He carefully tailors his approach to suit each age group and stage of growth. With younger teams like the U7s, his focus is on creating a fun, supportive environment where players can build confidence and learn the fundamentals through play. As his players mature, so too does his coaching. By the time they reach the U12 level, Tony introduces more structured sessions that emphasise tactical awareness, skill refinement, and the mental resilience needed to work together and compete as a cohesive unit.

“Coaching isn’t one-size-fits-all. I design every session to challenge and engage, but also to empower players to take responsibility for their growth.”

Tony is passionate about long-term development. His age-based roadmap ensures players are learning the right things at the right time, starting with fun and fundamentals in early years and gradually layering in more complex skills, tactics, and physical development as players mature.

A strong believer in tracking progress, Tony assesses his players through multiple lenses: technical improvement, tactical understanding, physical growth, and mental resilience. He also focuses heavily on team contribution, how players communicate, support one another, and grow together.

Among his most cherished moments are the small wins with big meaning, like the smiles and fist pumps after five consecutive passes in a U7 game, or watching his U10 team win a knockout tournament through pure grit and belief. More recently, seeing the camaraderie and self-belief flourish within his U11 group has been especially rewarding.

Stacey – U10 Girls MSAP

Stacey’s coaching journey began with a simple opportunity, and quickly became a passion. Now coaching the U10 Girls MSAP team at Bradbury Ambarvale FC, she leads with heart, creating a team culture built on encouragement, effort, and mutual respect.

“I coach with a growth-over-results mindset. It’s not about perfection or winning, it's about helping every player feel valued, capable, and part of something bigger than themselves.”

Stacey believes a strong team starts with connection. She encourages her players to communicate, support one another, and take pride in their role, whether it’s a tackle, a pass, or a moment of leadership. Her sessions focus on skill-building through fun, and her players know that giving their best effort always matters more than the scoreboard.

“We often talk about what makes a great team. It’s about lifting each other up, and when they do, the whole team becomes stronger.”

Coaching at the MSAP level has brought new challenges, and Stacey has embraced every one of them. After completing her Foundation of Football course, she incorporated two key lessons into her approach: using “we” to create shared ownership, and staying flexible when something isn’t working. This adaptability has made her sessions more responsive and player-focused.

Her training plans are shaped by post-match reflections, often using match footage to spot strengths and identify learning opportunities. She keeps informal notes on each player to track their individual progress—focusing on confidence, decision-making, and emotional growth just as much as technique.

“Coaching this team has taught me that how players feel on the field can influence how they perform more than anything else.”

One standout moment for Stacey came when her team recently executed everything they’d been working on under pressure. Their resilience and teamwork moved her to tears—a moment the players found both hilarious and heartwarming.

To keep spirits high, Stacey also injects fun into training, quick games like bullrush or lighthearted huddles about dinner plans remind her players that football is as much about joy and community as it is about learning.

Together, Tony and Stacey are shaping a football culture at Bradbury Ambarvale FC that values effort, development, and connection above all else. They are proof that great coaching isn’t just about tactics and results—it’s about creating an environment where players can grow in confidence, character, and belief.

Their leadership continues to make a lasting difference in the lives of their players, their club, and the wider Macarthur football community.

Thank you, Tony and Stacey, for leading with passion, purpose, and positivity.

Macarthur FA Launches Talent Development Program to Secure Pathway for Local Players into NPL

Macarthur Football Association is proud to officially launch the Talent Development Program (TDP) - a major new initiative designed to strengthen the player development pathway in our region and ensure that grassroots players continue to have clear, local opportunities to progress into NPL programs.

Launching in July 2025, the TDP has been developed in direct response to Football NSW’s decision to conclude the Association Youth League (AYL) at the end of this season. This structural change left many families and clubs asking, “What comes next?” —  MFA has designed the TDP as the answer.

This program reflects our unwavering commitment to player development in our region. It provides an essential platform for aspiring footballers aged U12 – U18 who are ready to take the next step in their journey from community to NPL 1, 2 or 3 football.

About the Talent Development Program

The TDP is built on nationally aligned coaching principles and a strong performance framework, offering:

  • Program developed and managed by Tim Aitken (MFA Head of Football)  – AFC A Licenced Coach with experience in National teams and the A-League
  • Expert coaching delivered by a team of Football Australia accredited coaches
  • A high-performance training environment with a focus on individual player development
  • High Performace games against other Associations and NPL clubs
  • Tactical development with position-specific coaching
  • Individual player talent ID program with feedback from program coaches
  • Player Development workshops focusing on all aspects of football

Whether a player is aiming to represent their local club, play at a representative/NPL level, or have the aim to represent our state or country, the TDP is a vital stepping stone.

Some of Australia’s most talented footballers, including Brett Emerton and Alanna Kennedy, began their journeys in Macarthur. The TDP is about continuing that legacy, keeping local players local for longer and ensuring that talent emerging from our region is recognised, supported, and celebrated.

Paul Bertolissio, General Manager of Macarthur FA, said “The TDP will help unearth some of the best young talent in our area, with a high-performance approach from our coaching team led by Tim Aitken. This program is designed to bridge the gap between club and NPL football. This will give the next generation of local talent the opportunity to be identified, coached and selected for NPL clubs. Through our training program and Talent ID games, TDP will create opportunities for players never seen before in Macarthur”

Full program details and eligibility criteria are now available on our dedicated Talent Development Program page. Whether you’re a player with big dreams or a parent seeking the next step for your child’s development — the TDP is here, and it starts now.

Celebrating the Women Behind the Game: Sia Sainsbury

For nearly two decades, Sia Sainsbury has been a steady and passionate presence in Macarthur’s football community. Starting as a team manager in 2006 when her eldest son began playing for St Mary’s Eaglevale SC, she’s since grown into one of the most trusted leaders in the Macarthur Football Association.

Sia’s journey through the game is a true reflection of what Female Football Week is all about stepping forward, showing up, and creating positive pathways for others.

In 2018, her younger son Jack was selected for the inaugural U9s MFA SAP (now known as JDL) team. True to form, Sia once again put her hand up to manage the side. That role evolved quickly.

“After a year of learning and growing, I had the opportunity to become the Convenor of the MFA JDL program,” she says.
“Then in 2021, I became Convenor of both the JDL and AYL programs.”

Now overseeing two of MFA’s key development pathways, Sia takes pride in organising game days and building meaningful relationships across clubs.

“I enjoy interacting with coaches, players, managers, and parents — both within and outside the club,” she adds.

But beyond the spreadsheets, schedules, and logistics, what truly drives Sia is seeing young players thrive.

“I’m always proud when players improve and achieve what I believe they can. But my best achievement is the environment we’ve created. I always see players with smiles on their faces. Even after they’ve left MFA, they still come up and say hello - that means everything.”

That connection is what keeps her coming back.

“The players are the reason I stay involved. And the friendships I’ve made along the way. I always have fun at training and game days, so it’s easy to keep coming back.”

As a long-serving volunteer and leader, Sia is passionate about seeing more women get involved in football in all capacities.

“We need more women taking part - as players, coaches, managers, referees. There’s a place for all of us.”

Her advice for women looking to step up?

“When you volunteer, learn as much as you can from those with more experience. But most importantly just show up. Do what’s needed. Don’t be afraid to put your hand up. It’s a lot of fun.”

Now very much working behind the scenes, Sia’s quiet leadership continues to shape the experiences of players each year, building not just better footballers, but a stronger community.

Thank you, Sia, for all that you do to make football better in Macarthur.

Celebrating the Women Behind the Game: Michelle Nieass

As part of Female Football Week, we are shining a spotlight on the incredible women shaping football in Macarthur, not just on the pitch, but in leadership, governance, and behind-the-scenes roles.

Today, we’re proud to feature Michelle, a true multi-role contributor: player, committee member at Campbelltown Uniting Church SC, and newly appointed Director on the Macarthur Football Association Board, where she focuses on grants and marketing.

Michelle’s football journey began at just six years old on the Central Coast, inspired by the love of the game she saw in her dad and brother.

“I wanted to be just like them,” she shares.

Fast forward to today, Michelle’s experience spans playing, refereeing, coaching, and club volunteering, a testament to her deep, lifelong connection to the sport. She’s coached teams across men’s, women’s, and mixed competitions, as well as running female football programs and goalkeeper clinics.

This year, Michelle stepped up to serve on the MFA Board, driven by a powerful purpose.

“I was once told I didn’t belong in football — that girls couldn’t play, it was only for boys. Now, I’m proud to help build a game aiming for everyone to have an equal chance to play, lead, and thrive.”

In her board role, Michelle focuses on helping identify and secure resources through grants and raising football’s profile through marketing, with the goal of expanding opportunities and making the game more accessible to all.

At the club level, she finds joy in the friendships and community at Campbelltown Uniting Church SC, a place where she can both play and give back as a committee member.

When asked why it’s so important to have more women in football leadership roles, Michelle puts it beautifully:

“Football thrives on diversity, and its leadership should reflect the communities it serves. Diverse voices drive innovation, accountability, and inspire the next generation. Women bring unique experiences and perspectives that help shape fairer, stronger programs and environments — both on and off the field.”

Her advice to other women thinking of stepping into leadership or volunteering?

“Believe in your value and trust that your voice matters in football. Don’t wait for permission to step forward. Seek mentors, build your network, and take up space in the rooms where change happens. Every contribution counts, and the game grows stronger with more women involved — not just on the pitch, but in decision-making roles too.”

Thank you, Michelle, for your passion, leadership, and the example you set for women and girls across our Macarthur football community.

Celebrating Women Behind the Game: Alison Tonna

As part of Female Football Week, we’re shining a light on the incredible women working behind the scenes in football across Macarthur. Today, we’re proud to feature Alison, long-time Club Secretary of Campbelltown Collegians FC.

Alison’s football journey began when her youngest son joined the club as an Under 6 player. Stepping up as a team manager, she quickly realised her organisational skills from her career as a personal assistant could be put to great use at the club.

“With my work life background being a personal assistant and organising a vast array of things for my company, I didn’t think running a club would be that different,” Alison explains.
“And doing something for the kids in the community is what I love about it the most.”

1000006984

More than 15 years later, Alison is still giving her time, energy, and passion to the club season after season. What keeps her coming back?

“Seeing the kids outside enjoying playing soccer. Also the AA guys – they’re a great bunch of guys. Seeing everyone enjoying themselves is great.”

For Alison, the club is more than a football field – it’s a community.

“The sense of community spirit at our club is what I enjoy most. Myself and the committee have fostered that spirit over the last few years, and it gets noticed. Collies and visitors love coming to our club. For me, it really is an outlet from my work and home life. I love the social interaction with all the families at Collies.”

Alison’s dedication hasn’t gone unnoticed. Among her proudest moments are being nominated as Campbelltown’s Australian of the Year and as a Macarthur Football Association Volunteer of the Year Nominee – a testament to her leadership and heart.

Running a grassroots club in a low socio-economic area isn’t easy, but Alison and her committee are determined to make football accessible for everyone.

“We do our best at Collies to assist families so their kids can play. We don’t want any child to miss out.”

When asked what advice she’d give to other women thinking about volunteering or taking on leadership roles in local football, Alison’s message is simple and powerful:

“Do it! It truly is a rewarding experience. To do something for the benefit of others for nothing in return is a great feeling.”

Thank you, Alison, for your dedication, generosity, and the countless hours you’ve given to Collies and the Macarthur football community. You’re an inspiration to us all.
