Macarthur Football Association General Manager Salv Carmusciano has set his sights on hitting the 11,000 registered player mark as the 2021 Grassroots season kicks into full gear.

Despite a compromised 2020 season due to COVID-19, almost 10,000 players hit the parks across the Macarthur region when Community Football recommenced in July 2020.

Carmusciano paid a glowing tribute to all the hard work and efforts of each of his respective clubs and their valued volunteers for keeping the sport alive.

“The season was delayed by three months due to the COVID-19 global pandemic,” said Carmusciano.

“There was no guarantee that community sport was going to kick-off in what were unprecedented times for not just the sport but the world in general.

“In the end it was the actions of the community by respecting the health advice that got the sport to the starting line.

“It was no secret that Football helped our community through a year like no other in 2020.

“Well over 800 teams, including 100 plus female teams signed-on once the Sports Minister announced a return to community sport.

“Keeping community sport going was another challenge in itself, with heavy restrictions in place to curb community transmissions.

“The MFA was incredibly proud of the 23 member clubs and the volunteers for their tireless work in supporting the local community.”

Carmusciano understands the power Football possess in keeping the local community spirit alive and hopes that this will once again be a main feature during the 2021 season.

“After getting through one of the most challenging years on record, the MFA is excited by the future of the game and has set its sights to crack 11,000 players for the first time this winter.

“Football is truly an inclusive sport which caters for all segments of the community.”

The Association will once again offer a wide variety of competitions catered for all age groups for both boys and girls as well as men and women.

“MiniRoos Football offers a fun introduction to primary-aged boys and girls via small-sides games.

“Girl’s only football is the fastest growing segment of the game, with girls as young as five playing in Girls-only teams (4 v 4) against other girls-only teams. Eleven-a-side Football commences at Under 12’s and there are a variety of divisions throughout the Youth Leagues (12-  18) to cater for varying skill levels.

“The MFA also offers Girls Youth Football for each age group starting from the age of 12.

“Senior Football (19+) is incredibly popular in Macarthur, with 10 Men’s Divisions and 5 Women’s Divisions registered in 2020. This is expected to grow further in 2021.

“Over 35’s and Over 45’s Leagues are also highly subscribed, with Leagues running on Friday nights.”
